The old Leftist, blame America first, extremist writer, Lowell Blankfort, is back in our local paper, and I recalled my first readings of the writer's monthly opinion pieces - usually diatribes against the president and the Republican Party. He occasionally did a major piece about another country; this time it was Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Blankster clearly devotes a great deal of effort to his pieces and spends a lot of someone's money traveling to remote sites. Therefore, I have always felt it was a shame that it was impossible to have any credibility in his reporting knowing how extremely biased he is. Like trying to read our major news outlets, only worse. I started reading his diatribes during the Bush 2 administration and was struck by the bitter, anti-American tone. Writing about some country in a far corner of the world, he always managed to compare us unfavorably to others, and seemingly to blame every world crisis on George Bush. I noticed a marked difference in tone to the recent article now that a fellow Socialist in power. His opinions are much more tolerant regarding the U.S. stance on Afghanistan and Pakistan now that a fellow Leftist is calling the shots, although he still managed to get in a few digs at Bush. The goal of this latest piece, aside from payment for his trip, seemed to be to give his version of the history and events of the region, and, to lower expectations for Obama's success there. He titled his article, "Can Obama win where Genghis Khan couldn't?" Would you like to guess what the title might have said if Bush was still president and taking the same actions? For example, Bush Afghanistan Policies a failure? Or Bush and Cheney destroy Afghanistan? Or Bush troop buildup causing millions of Afghani deaths?
